What chance is there that the 12/21/2012 prophecy is true?

Sol Bird asked:

I know, another doomsday question :P

But I’m asking this because there is lot of hype about the End Times and Conspiracy Theories lately. They say that the given date for this prophecy to come to a head is on 12/21/2012. In your opinion, is there a chance that this will take place or not? Why or why not?

Opinions from believers and non-believers welcome.

The same as a 6/17/2009 prophecy.

It’s not a doomsday prophecy. Their calander ends because every several thousand years it was to be reset. That’s all.

There have been countless doomsday prophesies since the beginning of time. None of them have come true for humanity as of yet.

It could be possible, or it may not happen. No one knows.

The only chance is that people destroy themselves by nukes, bio-weapons, etc. But that could occur anytime, as well as that date.

According to the Bible, the 2012 prophecy (the 2012 prophecy is not in the Bible, just so we’re all clear, it’s a Mayan prophecy) doesn’t matter. No one besides God the Father knows when “The End” will come.

I think that chance is very slim. My hypothesis is that it was just made up until 2012. In my opinion, I don’t think anything will happen.

The Mayan calendar date does not predict some cataclysmic end of the world as the conspiracy and doomsday theorists would like us to believe. That calendar just notes that at its end there will be a great change. What is that change? The Mayans took their secret to the grace.

Jesus notes that it’s not up to human beings to determine these kinds of things.

  • Burns says:

Was Madonna’s destiny to be a star

    ZERO!

That’s because scripture says that no man will know the time of Christ’s coming. So Jesus might come back on the 20th or the 22nd, or 1000 years later, but I guarantee you it won’t be 12/21/2012.

For some reason, people on Yahoo! Answers seem to think this is a Christian thing. It’s not. It has nothing to do with Jesus.

The whole thing started because the Aztec calendar ends in 2012, and the conspiracy theorists who are full of speculation and short on knowledge think that the Aztecs must’ve known something with their sacred geometry and stuff.

    It’s all nonsense.

Nothing to see here. Move along, move along.

10 minutes of research can show you that the Mesoamerican long count calendars go out beyond 2012, well into the 48th century.

Science also states on 12/21/12 there will be a very rare planetary alligment which occurs about every 25,000 years.

I hope not But It could happen. I dont think it will be the end of the world though.., maybe as we know it. But I feel that the world itself will not cease to exist.

December 21 – The Mesoamerican Long Count calendar, notably used by the pre-Columbian Maya civilization among others, completes a “great cycle” of thirteen b’ak’tuns (periods of 144,000 days each) since the mythical Creation date of the calendar’s current era.On this day the Long Count date at creation—written 13.0.0.0.0 in modern notation, equivalent to August 11, 3114 BC in the proleptic Gregorian calendar—is repeated for the first time in a span of a little over 5,125 solar years. The completion of this cycle and the repetition of the previous Creation’s Long Count ending date have been central to various 2012 doomsday predictions since the 1960s. Academic researchers have not concluded that the ancient Maya themselves attached similar significance to this point in time.

“The Hopi and Mayan elders do not prophesy that everything will come to an end. Rather, this is a time of transition from one World Age into another. The message they give concerns our making a choice of how we enter the future ahead. Our moving through with either resistance or acceptance will determine whether the transition will happen with cataclysmic changes or gradual peace and tranquility. The same theme can be found reflected in the prophecies of many other Native American visionaries from Black Elk to Sun Bear.”

I prophesy that on 08/21/2009 I will have intimate and special (perhaps even touchy) moments with every member of R&S I find remotely attractive. Chance? Nil. Why? I just made it up.

Now, why or more importantly how is there more veracity given to other prophecies of this nature. They are made by humans, with very little insight and even less intellect.

Mind you, if anyone does want to have a play on the 21st, come on over.

  • Loopy says:

I am bothered by an apparent confluence:

Apophus in this context refers neither to Stargate nor Egyptology, but Astrophysics. This is one of ~4000 Near Earth Orbiting Objects, already mapped. This one, in a tightly-elliptical orbit around old Sol of .93 solar years, in particular has already been calculated out to pass so closely as to slip by Earth below the orbits of our own artificial satellites, an astronomical near-miss. Yet, according to whose paper you read, the odds of it actually striking Earth are astronomically small, anywhere from something to ten-to-the-minus-fourth to something to ten-to-the-minus-eighth, but arriving precisely that same day that the Mayan Calender goes silent at the end of it’s last 52-year cycle.

It is my contention that this 10-mile potato-looking offset cylinder contains an iron core. Where I have to date been unable to entice anyone of the stature of a Tyson DeGrasse to presume for the sake of argument an appropriately horrid point-of-impact, say, the Yellowstone Caldera, at, oh, three times present velocity, and work back to point of arc tangent. My thought is that if one does, and the result is within 500 miles, it will simply home in, create a crater to rival that found off the Yucatan Peninsula, and render the problem of overpopulation of all but the most primitive microbial life on the planet moot issue.

Oh, well, it’s probably nothing at all, my crystal ball is as cloudy as the next…

the aztec calender ends in 2012 , a lot of people read into it way to far. but let me ask you this…if they could see that far into the future, why did they not see the end of their civilization? ..and if they did why continue with the construction of the calender? the truth is , as long as people are scared to die they will invent ways , outside personal influence, to die .

I’d say one yoctopercentile, or .0000000000000000000000000001%. The simple fact is, there’s no evidence that the world will end in 2012. Indeed, there’s no evidence that the Mayans predicted it would end then; all we know is that their calendar ends at 12/21/2012, which could mean any of several different things.

To believe that it’s true would require you to be

Also, query: why would a Christian take the predictions of the pagan Mayans seriously?

every time a nutter claims that the world will end, he has been wrong.

an old defiinition for “crazy” is “performing the same action over and over and expecting a different result”.

These nutters are by that definition “crazy”, as they predict the end of the world every few years and when it doesn’t end, simply move on the the next prediction.

Wait just a minute while I call my Las Vegas contact——————————————————————————————— he says all BETS are OFF! They don’t bet money on fake hoaxes!

Read the links — especially those from Neil Tyson and NASA–

There are now over 30,000 Search results for 2012 on YAHOO ANSWERS! Please do a SEARCH before you post another 2012 question. This has already been answered too many times.

To the ASKER– The 2012 hoax is more like FANTASY, and SUPERSTITION than SCIENCE!

Do you really believe that the 30,000+ amateur astronomers in the USA, and the hundreds of professional astronomers, would have just MISSED this! For example, no where on the internet are the sky coordinates of Planet X given. Just try to find them——– you will NOT find them anywhere. This PLANET X is a complete HOAX!— and does not exist anywhere in the sky.

AND——— 2012 web sites always site other sources that site NASA — never do they site NASA directly with a link— just read the sources they are never DIRECTLY NASA sources.

If you can give me the coordinates I will find this so-called planet X with the computer GOTO scope shown in my signature photo– or in the 16 inch GOTO scope that our Astronomy club owns. I don’t expect to ever hear from you with the proper coordinates.

And, no other Near Earth Objects are on a collision course with Earth right now or in the foreseeable future……………. aliens with death ray guns are NOT on the way— and a pole shift will occur in maybe another 10,000 years— no black hole is nearby to swallow the Earth or somehow (against all of Keplers planetary motion laws)- move it off it’s orbit, and a solar flare will NOT burn up the Earth………. and on and on with many more impossible astronomical events.

And, by the way, Mars WILL NOT BE as large as the moon later this year! This is another internet Hoax! so delete the chain letter you might receive.

Every web site promoting the 2012 hoax is doing so for either FUN or MONEY! (although I don’t think it’s very funny to scare kids or the uneducated). So please forget about this 2012 stuff—

The 2012 HOAX is just a fictional story……………….that happens to be all over the internet.

The details behind 21 December 2012 make no sense at all. The originator of the so-called prophecy studied at the University of Chicago in Arts more than 40 years ago. He was Jose Arguelles then. He now says time is faster than light (whatever that means) and that the way we measure time is harmful to all life on Earth (how does that work?).

He now calls himself Valum Voltan and says he is the re-incarnation of a Mayan priest and lives in New Zealand, last I heard. All this stuff was based on the fact that a Mayan count of days runs out of numbers on 21 or 23 December by our calendar. That has as much to do with the Mayan counting system as anything else. The Mayans counted by 20, then by 18s then by 20 again and so on.

The Mayans were pretty fair ***** eye astronomers for a stone age people and had enough sense not to predict anything at all, except maybe party time. I reckon they were smarter than Arguelles.

But crazy as Arguelles ideas are, he did not say the world would end on 21 December 2012. All he said was that this would be the beginning of a new era. That was about 20 years ago.

Since then, people who are just as batty, but in a different way have grabbed his ideas and run away with them. Some of them were habitual users of mescalin, LSD or magic mushrooms and wrote down their visions. One based this on his special (mis)interpetation of the I Ching, and when it didn’t quite fit 2012 he fudged it.

Another called Nancy Lieder claimed that aliens had abducted her about 1993 and told her that a planet called X would pass close to the Earth and cause a magnetic pole shift and other damage. That would be in 2003. Since it didn’t come, she started making up stories of how it was a trial to test the governments of the world and that the planet would appear later. She usually says 2012 as far as I know.

Apart from Voltan and Lieder, others have jumped on the bandwagon and have predicted everything from bees dying to collisions with stray planets. There are supposed to be alignments with the other planets or the centre of the galaxy, both of which will not happen.

This stuff is a great example of bandwagon jumping by freaks and frauds and silly school yard rumors

The frauds are vicious liars and only in it for the money. They are trying to sell “survival” supplies, shelters, books, videos and what all, but to do that you have to frighten people first.

The people who swallow it are mostly kids whose BS detectors have not developed.

“They say” – who is “they”?

“They” are a small number of misguided people that are perpetuating the myth about 12/21/2012 – the date is a complete fabrication, based on the date the Mayan Long Count calendar ends the current cycle and would start the next cycle.
    There is no prophecy.
The whole pile of trash about 2012 is simply a bunch of different “prophecies” all lumped together under the one date to lend it weight.

No one – NO ONE – knows when the world will end.

To be frank, no the world does not end. This is just another scam of a prophetical sign. Like 6/6/06 as the mark of the beast. Plese do not listen to people who tell you different its just to get you paranoid. Dont you think that the Maya couldve gotten tired writing a calender more than 2012 years after their time. That and their belief was centered along the movements of astrological symbols. They believed in repeating the calender. Most Mayan historians disprove the theory as well. Remember that the civilization of theirs died out mostly. So to put it in short version NO the world does not END. But believe what you want everyone has their own way of thinking
