Argentina Asks UK To, “Give Peace A Chance”
Argentina feels threatened by the presence of a British battleship near the Falkland Islands.
The Argentinian foreign minister, Hector Timerman, went to the United Nations on Friday and showed slides of the British threat in the region.
He said that a Vanguard submarine was operating in the area as well. “Thus far the UK refuses to say whether it is true or not,” he told a press conference in New York. “Are there nuclear weapons or are there not? The information Argentina has is that there are these nuclear weapons.” Quoting John Lennon, he added: “Give peace a chance.”
Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner,Argentina’s president, said Britain’s destroyer, HMS Dauntless, was a threat. She also considered Prince William’s presence was uncalled for as well.
There is a long standing concern over who actually “owns” the Falklands Islands. Tensions are running high with the 30th anniversary of the Falklands war at hand.
